Privacy statement

What this website does with your data, which services are involved, and what you can do about it.

Who is responsible

Jake Ortega, Vlaardingen, the Netherlands, is responsible for this website, jakeortega.nl. You can reach me at contact@jakeortega.nl.

What data is handled, by whom, and why

Four things can involve personal data. Each one is described below.

1. Hosting (Firebase Hosting, by Google)

What
When your browser asks for a page, the hosting service receives your IP address, the address of the page you asked for, and technical details your browser sends, such as its type and language. Like most web servers, it keeps standard server logs.
Why
To deliver the site to you and to keep it secure and working.
Legal basis
Legitimate interest: a website cannot be delivered without it.
Who
Google, as the provider of Firebase Hosting. It acts on my behalf as a processor.

2. Analytics (PostHog), only if you accept

What
Page views, clicks and a few specific actions such as starting an email to me or downloading the resume, plus technical details such as your browser, device type, screen size, referring page and approximate location derived from your IP address. Errors in the page may be reported too. PostHog stores a random identifier in a cookie and in your browser storage so it can tell visits apart. I do not send your name or email address to it.
When
Only after you press Accept in the cookie banner. Until then, and if you press Reject, the analytics script is not loaded and nothing is sent to PostHog.
Why
To see which pages are read, so I can improve the site.
Legal basis
Your consent. Storing and reading the identifier on your device also needs your consent. You can withdraw it at any time, see your choices below.
Who
PostHog, using its EU cloud (the host used by this site is eu.i.posthog.com). PostHog acts on my behalf as a processor.

3. Email sent to this site's addresses (Resend)

What
The site has no contact form. It shows email addresses ending in @jakeortega.nl. If you send a message to one of them, the email service Resend receives it, a small function running on Google Cloud in an EU region fetches the full message, and it is forwarded to my personal mailbox. This includes your email address, name if you give it, the subject, the text and any attachments.
Why
To read and answer your message.
Legal basis
Legitimate interest: handling mail that you chose to send me.
Who
Resend (receives and sends the email), Google (runs the forwarding function), and my personal email provider (holds my mailbox). If you use a mailto: link on the site, your own email app and provider send the message, not this site.

The site links to places such as GitHub, LinkedIn and the products I build. Those sites are only contacted if you follow the link, and they have their own privacy statements. Fonts are served from this site, and the project videos are files on this site, so nothing is loaded from a font or video service in the background. The site does not use Google Analytics, advertising cookies or social media tracking pixels.

What the site stores in your browser

The site itself stores a few small settings in your browser: your theme, your cookie choice, whether animation is paused, and your progress on the review checklist. They never leave your browser. The full list, with what each item is for, is on the cookie policy.

How long data is kept

  • Hosting logs are kept by Google under its own settings for the service.
  • Analytics data stays in my PostHog project until I delete it or the project's retention setting removes it.
  • Email you send stays in Resend according to its settings, and in my mailbox until I delete it.
  • Browser settings stay until you clear the site's data in your browser.

Who else gets your data, and where it goes

Only the services named above: Google, PostHog and Resend, plus my own email provider. I do not sell personal data, and I do not share it for advertising. Some of these companies are based outside the European Union, so data can be processed outside the European Economic Area. In that case the provider is responsible for a valid transfer mechanism, and you can read its terms on its own website.

Your rights

Under the GDPR (in Dutch, the AVG) you have the right to:

  • ask whether I hold data about you and get a copy (access);
  • have wrong data corrected (rectification);
  • have your data deleted (erasure);
  • ask me to limit how it is used (restriction);
  • receive the data you gave me in a usable format (portability);
  • object to use that is based on legitimate interest;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, without affecting what happened before.

To use any of these, email contact@jakeortega.nl. I will answer within one month, as the law requires. Analytics data is stored under a random identifier, so to find yours I may need that identifier. It is in the cookie and browser storage listed on the cookie policy.

If you think I handled your data wrongly, please tell me first. You can also complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens.

Your choices

You can change your cookie choice at any time with the "Cookie settings" link in the footer of every page , or right here: . If you reject after accepting, analytics stop at once and the analytics cookie and storage are removed.
